The inception of this mysterious duo happened two years ago. Comprised of veteran yyc dj’s Sonny Chiba and Lenza, CABAL is a high concept project focused with an ode to their love of cinema, soundtracks, and guttural techno.
Since their “Outskirts" ep release on substation recordings last year, the guys have been inspired in the warm response and accolades it received, as well as fine-tuning and honing their craft int the studio. A penchant for storytelling is always at the forefront of their sound design, and with their newest release it has never been more prevalent.
The EP finds it’s voice in two distinctly different chapters. Both have the signature depth and arc that are expected within a CABAL track, but the way in which they are executed and presented are polar opposite.
“Off The Kuff” throws us into a pulsating and progressive journey via droning arpeggiated 303’s, vibrantly crisp 808’s, and an overall relentless drive. This is juxtaposed by the underlying breakdown which lull’s us with a hypnotic kick until finally dropping us back into a full fledged club weapon. Recorded and performed live in one take, it is their most direct and fast production to date, hence the title “Off The Kuff”.
"Street Anatomy” finds us in new and uncharted territory. A deep and melancholic ride, both elegant and gritty in equal measure. with it the guys have produced their most forward thinking and seminal tune to date. You can’t help but get a sense of nostalgia to the early days of rave culture. The 303’s swell and the 808’s kick into a tune that harkens back to the early days of acid house and the underbelly of club culture.
